WE have been a couple of busy bees the last few weeks. Jessica and I went down to my motheres on Feb21 for a short visit. Wel, short for me. I took off on the 23rd to meet David down in New Orleans. My mother was a kind enough, and saintly enough to keep my Bug-a-boo for the next five days...with out me!
David was downin New Orleans for a conference for the Southern Trial Lawyers Association. Yep, hob nobbin with some pretty big hitters. He also gave a presentation down there which was pretty impressive. What can I say? That man of man of really making a name for himself and moving up in the lawyer world.
We did of course find some time to enjoy the New Orleans nightlife and Mardi Gras. We were downin the french quarter, which you might have read did not sustain as much damage as most of the city. Still, several shops had just reopened and were only open for Mardi Gras. Lots of shops still had plywood up in woods and several looked as if they had just closed down for good. The people overall were all very nice. And everyone of them had a story to share. And despite what a lot of people may think, these people are not just looking for handouts and expecting the government to fix it all. Yes there was some grumbling --- which after nine months of waiting for insurance pay outs or even the promised federal aid, I think is allowed. But spirits were high, and people were all happy to be there; or at lest putting on pretty darn good masks.
The cab drivers were more than happy to share stories and pont out neighborhoods that had been completely deystroyed, were still under water, or still completely evacuated. You could see water lines on building that were a good six feet high. Despite everyones attitude, it's clear that there is considerable devastation that will take decades to repair.
In any case, I returend to my mother's after an amazing weekend. She was very ready for my return. Apparently it's been awhile since she's had tobe the full time caregiver for a 2 1/2 year old. Correction, because of day care when i was young, this is really the first time around. The promises of potty training were forgotten, no surprise. I think in general it's just fair to say every one survied and was happy i was back. So happy that for two day I had an extra 30 ilbs attached to my legs when i walked and in my lap any time i sat down. We stayed on for another week.
We came home on March 5. I discovered to my great deleight that I no longer HAVE to put her in a car seat on the plane. This is a good thing. SHe had totally freaked out when I had had to put her in one on the plane ride from Shreveport to Atlanta. I mean totally demonic possession level of freak out. I finally took her out and held her for the entire flight and even during landing, though the flight attendant had told me i couldn't. With the way she was screaming I would have taken a fine...and the rest of the passengers probably would have taken up a collection to pay it. Yeah, it was that bad.
SO last week was sort of a getting back into routine week. You know the drill..clean the house, do the laundry, and generally restablish the rules of the house.
And in other news...I turned 31 on Monday. My goodness I am older than I ever thought I'd be. And I feel so m uch older that it makes me fear for my 40s already. And in addition to this lovely mess I went in yesterday to have a crown put in. I was knocked out, numb and loopy for most of the day and night. nd this morning a huge peice of the crown FELL OUT. Can you beleive that? I am not happy.
And on to other good new..I'm looking at going out to BlogHer in July. I am no were in the class of the people I love to read, but I think it sounds like fun and I am all for a girls weekend of gettting to meet people i relate to so well so often.
In any case, that's the update.
